These places look AI-generated. They're real.
Seven of the most beautiful drives in Europe. The roads built for pulling over.
The trip
Seven roads that are the destination.
You don't drive these to get somewhere. You drive them because the road is the trip. Switchbacks above tree line. Pull-offs at every kilometer because the view earned one. Light that does the work at dawn and the hour before sunset.
The seven we picked share three things: a road surface you can trust, places to actually stop, and timing that survives the season. No reels of dirt tracks that nobody can actually drive. No "iconic" drives you wait three hours in summer traffic for.
Pick one drive for a weekend. Pair two for a week. Do all seven across a month if you have it.

Frequently asked.
What is the most beautiful drive in Europe? +
The Great Dolomites Road (SS48) is the most photographed for a reason: four mountain passes in 110 kilometers. Tre Cime di Lavaredo runs a close second. The Amalfi SS163 is the most famous, but it is also the most crowded.
Can I do all seven in one trip? +
Yes, in 28 days. Our paid planner combines them into a single Lisbon to Edinburgh itinerary. For shorter trips, pair two compatible drives: Maloja with the Dolomites, or Amalfi with the Algarve via a Lisbon to Naples flight.
Do I need a special license? +
A standard EU or US driving license works in all seven countries. Many rentals are manual transmission; book automatic early or expect to drive stick.
What about cross-border rentals? +
Most rentals allow EU crossings with a small surcharge (around €30 to €60). Switzerland to Italy and Croatia to neighboring countries usually need advance notice. Confirm at booking.
When should I go? +
June through September for the Alpine drives (Maloja, Dolomites, Tre Cime). April to June or September for the coastal drives (Amalfi, Algarve). The Scottish Highlands work May through September.
