It looks like Croatia. But quieter.

Five days. Bay of Kotor, Sveti Stefan, Tara Canyon, Durmitor, Budva. Half the prices, a fraction of the crowds, and one of the most underrated countries in Europe.

The trip

Smaller than Wales. A coast like Croatia's. Mountains like the Alps'.

Montenegro doesn't get the credit it deserves. The Bay of Kotor is as dramatic as anywhere on the Adriatic. The old towns are intact and unhurried. The interior is a national park most people in the EU have not heard of. You can drive the whole country in four hours.

And then there's the price. A waterfront seafood dinner for two in Kotor runs about half what the same plate costs across the border in Croatia. A mountain lodge in Žabljak is €40 a night. A bay-of-kotor boat tour is €20.

Five days is enough to see the highlights without rushing. Three days if you only want the coast. Ten days if you want the slow version with Lake Skadar and Ostrog.

The five places

A loop you can drive in a week.

  1. 01

    Kotor Old Town

Medieval fortified streets and a 1,350-step climb to the fortress above the bay. Best at dusk after the cruise ships leave.

  2. 02

    Bay of Kotor

A morning boat tour to Our Lady of the Rocks. Lunch in Perast, the quieter village across the bay.

  3. 03

    Sveti Stefan

The islet from every Adriatic postcard. View from the public lookout above. Lunch in Petrovac, ten minutes south.

  4. 04

    Durmitor National Park

Mountain road country and Black Lake. Base in Žabljak. A reset from the coast.

  5. 05

    Tara Canyon

Europe's deepest canyon. Cross the Đurđevića Tara bridge. Zipline or raft a section of the river.

  6. 06

    Budva

Walled old town, a quick swim at Mogren beach, then back to Kotor for the night.

Common questions

Frequently asked.

Is Montenegro cheaper than Croatia? +

Yes, usually 30 to 50 percent less than equivalent Croatian coast towns. Mid-range hotels in Kotor run roughly €40 to €70 a night in shoulder season versus €70 to €120 in Split or Dubrovnik.

When is the best time to visit Montenegro? +

Mid-May to mid-June and all of September. The water is warm enough to swim, the alpine roads are open, and the crowds are a fraction of July and August.

Do I need a rental car? +

For this itinerary, yes. Buses connect the coastal towns, but reaching Durmitor and the Tara Canyon without a car turns a half-day into a full day each way.

Which airport should I fly into? +

Tivat for the coast (ten minutes from Kotor). Podgorica for the mountains. Dubrovnik often has the cheapest flights from the US and UK, with a two-hour drive across the Montenegro border.

How many days do I really need? +

Five days covers the highlights without rushing. Three days gets you the coast only. Ten days adds Lake Skadar, Ostrog Monastery, and a slower pace through the interior.
